Classes will be held at CEFAM (Centre d’études Franco-Américain de Management), a Franco-American Business school working in partnership with five American Business schools (AACSB accredited). CEFAM is located on a campus that houses 24 different schools in a business and university area with many restaurants around. It is one metro stop from Lyon’s historic center, a popular area well known for its architecture from the antiquity and middle ages as well as for its traditional Lyonnais restaurants. It is also very close to the city center, the most lively part of Lyon, with many cafés, restaurants, and clothing stores.
Classrooms are furnished with audio-visual equipment including interactive and overhead projectors.

Its remarkable location at the heart of Europe links Lyon, with an average of 90 minutes travel time, to all of the major European metropolises including Barcelona, Milan, Turin, and Geneva thanks to a network of communication by air, road, or rail. The proximity of Provence, the Mediterranean, the Alps, and the large wine regions adds charm to the Lyon area.
Lyon's fine cuisine is an integral part of the local way of life. The city is the capital of French gastronomy and offers a choice between the popular charm of its famous bouchon bistros, the refined elegance of its two- and three-star gourmet restaurants, and the warm lively atmosphere of its open-air markets.
The 2000-year-old historic center is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site; artistic creativity thrives and cultural activities abound all year round. Lyon truly offers a wide palette of cultural events of international standing.

You will register for your courses at your home campus. See your campus coordinator for course numbering. You will take a total of three classes for a total of 15 credits, including a French Language and Culture class taught by local faculty. These courses will count towards your Spring quarter.
English 253/4/5: Creative Nonfiction Writing (5 credits)
Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 placement or higher.
This course will focus on memoir, travel writing, and food writing. Students will keep travel journals and participate in regular writing activities as they reflect on their time in Lyon. Writing activities will encourage students to engage with the city of Lyon, through exploring neighborhoods such as Fourvière Hill, Parc de la Tête d’Or, and Vieux Lyon, and visiting farmers markets, cafes, and restaurants. Students will read examples of travel and food writing such as Earnest Hemmingway’s A Moveable Feast and Julia Child’s My Life in France. As students write, they will learn creative non-fiction craft including: narration, characterization, dialogue, scene, voice, and tone.
English 101: English Composition 1 (5 credits)
Through reading and writing about French and global food-related topics, students will develop clear and effective writing skills. Students will explore the offerings of Lyon, France’s gastronomic capital, while reading selected texts from Eating Words: A Norton Anthology of Food. Authors will include Francois Rabelais, Jean Anthelme Brillait-Savarin, Marcel Proust, MFK Fisher, and Julia Child. This course will emphasize writing as a process, focusing on reading analytically and critically and composing and revising writing in-context. The course will culminate in a student-led paper focused on a food-related topic of their choice. Field trips to markets such as Les Halles de Lyon and the Saint Antoine Farmers Market, and The Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie, France’s gastronomy museum, will enhance the research experience.
English 201 (also known as ENGL& 102): The Research Paper (5 credits)
Students will learn the strategies and best practices for research writing in this course, focusing on food writing and global food-related topics. Students will explore the offerings of Lyon, France’s gastronomic capital, while reading selected texts from Eating Words: A Norton Anthology of Food. Authors will include Francois Rabelais, Jean Anthelme Brillait-Savarin, Marcel Proust, MFK Fisher, and Julia Child. The course will culminate in a student-led research project focused on a food-related topic of their choice. MKTG 200: International Marketing (5 credits)
This class explores the fundamentals of marketing and applies that learning to the international business landscape. Students will consider the impact of marketing environment variables such as politics, legal systems, religions, class structures, economies, technological advancements, weather, and terrain. Lyon is historically known for being a production center of silk, and much of studying commerce begins with a review of the Silk Road. Instead of just talking about the history of a unique Asian tangible good being brought to the West, we can deeper explore how this import transformed trade between countries in Western Europe that had the means to replicate the desired material. We’ll visit the Croix-Rousse silk district and partner with regional organizations that offer cultural experiences connected to the industry. Being in Lyon provides us an opportunity to explore differences between France and the rest of the European Union. The Department for International Trade is based in the city, creating an exceptionally relevant opportunity that directly supports what we’re learning in the class.
MKTG 242: Social Media Strategy (5 credits)
Students will learn the fundamentals of social media advertising and marketing, and how those skills impact a larger digital framework. While a hands-on course, the curriculum is focused on the application of social media skills to craft an integrated marketing strategy and executive vision. How Europeans use and enjoy social media is in many ways similar to what we have experienced in the United States, but there are also some interesting differences. In this class you will not only learn how to craft social media messages that connect businesses with consumers, but consider how we might approach that differently in various parts of the world. We will line up local businesses in Lyon that are interested in having English language marketing provided, which will give you all an opportunity to highlight on your resumes some professional experience working overseas.
This is an academic program and students are expected to enroll in a full-time course load (15 credits). Failure to participate in the academic coursework may result in dismissal from the program. Students are encouraged to make the most of their classroom learning as it will enhance understanding of all the local area has to offer.
Primary Faculty – Professor Caitlin Morris, Bellevue College
Caitlin received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing: Fiction from Western Washington University, and her B.A. in Literature and Comparative Literary Cultural Studies from Franklin University Switzerland. Since 2012, she has taught composition, literature, and creative writing courses at several colleges including Western Washington University, Highline College, and Bellevue College. Caitlin has extensive international experience, having earned her undergraduate degree in Switzerland which included field-based academic travel to Germany, Croatia, Scotland, Greece, and Namibia. Recently, her fiction has appeared in Ghost Parachute and The Jersey Devil Press.
Secondary Faculty – Kyle Barber, Bellevue College
Kyle is the program chair of the Marketing, Data Analytics, and Digital Media Arts programs at Bellevue College, where he has taught for eight years. Previously he worked in New York City at some of the largest global advertising agencies like McCann, Wunderman, Razorfish, and Starcom. He has focused much of his career on helping Fortune 500 corporations think about data capture, measurement, and demonstrating performance. He is also a digital platform evangelist: helping brands think about social media or mobile devices in conjunction with event marketing, retail, TV programming, etc., to have conversations with consumers. Now that he is a full-time professor, he likes creating opportunities for students around experiential learning such as leading the DECA and Speech teams at Bellevue College. Kyle earned his BA in Rhetoric/Communication from George Mason University and went on to complete an MA in Education Technology and Curriculum Development from the University of Phoenix.

- Day trip to Beaune, a beautiful town in the world famous wine-making region Burgundy. Burgundy is also renowned for its mustard-making. Dijon, where the Dijon mustard is from, is the capital of Burgundy.

- Visit to a small chocolate workshop
Use free weekends to travel in France and to Europe’s great cities including London, Amsterdam, Florence and Madrid.
Students will be living with French host families in Lyon. They will have their own bedroom and will have the option to have dinner with the French family every night. Breakfast is also included in the package. Students will be responsible for their own lunch meal but will have access to the fridge to store their food and to the kitchen to cook. Students will fill out a questionnaire about host family options in order to best understand the students’ needs and find the most appropriate family for each of them. CEFAM works in collaboration with Lyon Expat Agency, a company dedicated to arranging accommodations for expatriates and study abroad students in Lyon. They have carefully selected the families and visited all the houses in which students will be living.

- Accommodation in a single-room in a homestay within a residential neighborhood of Lyon and the surrounding area

A team of WCCCSA Study Abroad Coordinators will provide all pertinent logistics, health and safety information to help you prepare for your study abroad experience. The faculty member/s will also discuss their course details, and academic and behavioral expectations. You should also invite parents, guardians, or whomever you feel should attend with you. Coffee will be provided in the morning and lunch will be included.
