Come study in Lyon, rated the number one city in France for students! Lyon is France’s second largest city and an important European crossroad. Its remarkable location at the heart of Europe links Lyon, with an average of 90 minutes travel time, to all of the major European metropolises including Barcelona, Milan, Turin, and Geneva thanks to a network of communication by air, road, or rail. The proximity of Provence, the Mediterranean, the Alps, and the large wine regions adds charm to the Lyon area.
Lyon's fine cuisine is an integral part of the local way of life. The city is the capital of French gastronomy and offers a choice between the popular charm of its famous bouchon bistros, the refined elegance of its two- and three-star gourmet restaurants, and the warm lively atmosphere of its open-air markets.
The 2000-year-old historic center is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site; artistic creativity thrives and cultural activities abound all year round. Lyon truly offers a wide palette of cultural events of international standing.
Classes will be held at CEFAM (Centre d’études Franco-Américain de Management), a Franco-American Business school working in partnership with five American Business schools (AACSB accredited). CEFAM is located on a campus that houses 24 different schools in a business and university area with many restaurants around. It is one metro stop from Lyon’s historic center, a popular area well known for its architecture from the antiquity and middle ages as well as for its traditional Lyonnais restaurants. It is also very close to the city center, the most lively part of Lyon, with many cafés, restaurants, and clothing stores.
Classrooms are furnished with audio-visual equipment including interactive and overhead projectors.

Professor Alexia Nelson received her B.A. in English Literature from the University of California at Santa Barbara and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing (nonfiction emphasis) from Portland State University. Since 2010, she has taught composition, literature, and creative writing courses at Clark College, where she also runs a reading series and an annual literary festival. Alexis loves to travel and has lived abroad on two previous occasions: she spent her junior year of college studying in Budapest, Hungary, and later taught English as a foreign language in the medieval French city of Rouen. Both of these experiences of cultural immersion were personally, professionally, and intellectually transformational, and Alexis looks forward to witnessing her students’ own transformations while sharing her passions for writing, literature, and travel with them.
Dr. Karen Champagnie Alman
Dr. Alman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in her native Jamaica at the University of the West Indies, where she also studied French language and literature. She went on to complete graduate studies in Communications at the University of Southern California (M.A.) and Michigan State University (Ph.D.). Karen has taught at several universities and colleges in the Pacific Northwest including the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, South Puget Sound Community College, the Evergreen State College, and currently Wenatchee Valley College where teaches and heads the Communication Department since 2013. Over the years, Karen has built interactive, immersive learning curricula designed to help students develop their communication competencies. She has traveled to several countries including France, Ireland and the UK where she enjoys the linguistic, artistic, and historic diversity that abounds. She looks forward to the promise that Lyon holds for students to learn and practice cross-cultural communication skills.
Students register for their courses at the home campus. See your study abroad advisor for course offering. Students will take a total of 3 classes including a French Language and Culture class.
This is an academic program and students are expected to enroll in a full-time course load (15 credits). Failure to participate in the academic coursework may result in dismissal from the program. Students are encouraged to make the most of their classroom learning as it will enhance understanding of all the local area has to offer.
ENGLISH 127: CREATIVE NONFICTION WRITING – Life in Lyon (5 credits)
Creative nonfiction writing uses the techniques of creative writing such as characterization, description, dialogue, and scene to tell real-life stories. In this course, students will explore a variety of nonfiction genres including travel writing, food writing, and personal narrative. Taking their experiences in Lyon as their raw material, they will transform them into engaging and meaningful pieces of writing. While our main source of inspiration will be the city of Lyon itself, we will also study classic and contemporary examples of creative nonfiction set in France or by French authors. Ultimately, students will return home with a written record of the places, people, ideas, and experiences they encountered during their time in Lyon.
ENGLISH 270: AMERICAN LITERATURE – Visions of France (5 credits)
We are far from the first intrepid travelers to be enchanted by the idea of living in France. For many decades, France has drawn artists of all types from America and elsewhere to its shores. Why is this, and how has the reality of life in France both conformed to and contradicted the fantasy? This course examines 20th century American literature through the lens of expatriate authors living in France. We will ask what France has represented to the imagination of these writers and how French culture and ideas influenced their work. Along the way, we’ll consider the broader movements that helped define 20th century American literature. Finally, students will be encouraged to explore connections between course texts and their own experiences in Lyon.
CMST&210: Interpersonal Communication - Finding Common Ground in Lyon (5 credits)
Like the bridges that span the two rivers in Lyon, we will explore verbal bridges that connect individuals, and allow them to find common ground. However, we will also come face-to-face with language barriers; what happens when meanings get ‘lost in translation.’ Not to worry, students will acquire the tools and techniques needed to appropriately and effectively work their way through cross-cultural communication challenges. The principles, processes, and practices of dyadic (one-to-one) communication will be adapted for students to sharpen their verbal and nonverbal skills as they navigate the exciting, new environment of Lyon.
This course fulfills a Humanities distribution requirement for the AA and AS degree.
CMST&220: Public Speaking - Parlez-Vous en France? (5 credits)
Great public speaking begins with great content. And great content comes not only from personal passion, but also from the people and places we encounter in our meanderings through Lyon, France: the restaurants, museums, historical sites in the city’s nine arrondissements. In learning to master the art of rhetoric, students will delve into topic choice, research, organization & outlining of content, effective use of voice, body, and self-confidence. But the course is not just about one’s own speaking, it is also about the respect we give to others in being active listeners, observers, and evaluators of their speeches.
This course fulfills a Humanities distribution requirement for the AA and AS degree.

- Day trip to Beaune, a beautiful town in the world famous wine-making region Burgundy. Burgundy is also renowned for its mustard-making. Dijon, where the Dijon mustard is from, is the capital of Burgundy.

- Visit to a small chocolate workshop
Use free weekends to travel in France and to Europe’s great cities including London, Amsterdam, Florence and Madrid.

What to bring: Students need to bring (a) a signed copy of the Student Guidelines, (b) 4 passport photos, (c) a copy of your passport, (d) flight itineraries for students not on the group flight, (e) a notepad to take notes, and (f) questions. Student participants should also invite parents, guardians, or whomever they feel should attend with them.
Coffee will be provided in the morning and lunch will be served. The faculty will be available to discuss their courses and expectations.
