In June 2008, former President Jack Oharah signed the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, committing the college to becoming a climate-neutral institution.
The commitment had three major goals:
- Initiate development of comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality as soon as possible.
- Initiate two or more of the following tangible actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while comprehensive plan is being developed.
- Make action plan, inventory, and periodic progress reports publicly available by providing them to the Association of the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) for posting and dissemination.
In 2007-08, Tim Hohn, a now retired horticulture faculty member involved in the currently inactive Sustainability Council, completed a Sustainability Assessment of our campus. The goal was to improve our sustainability performance, and we now have a clearer picture of where we stood.
This assessment gave us a more complete picture of what’s going on, what the opportunities are for improvement, and therefore where to focus our energies and efforts. This project also established the data points for us to monitor in the future as benchmarks of improvement.

In 2008-2009, we conducted a baseline carbon footprint. View the carbon footprint report.
